MUSTARD SEEDS: Can be used as a condiment in a variety of dishes or roasted in a skillet first to bring out the natural flavors. You can also make your own mustard by softening the seeds in vinegar, wine or water. Grind this mixture into a paste; add herbs and spices such as tarragon, turmeric, garlic, pepper, paprika or any other combination of preferred spices to give your homemade mustard its own unique flavor.
INTERESTING FACT: Dating back about 5,000 years, Mustard Seeds are mentioned in ancient Sanskrit writings. They are also mentioned in the New Testament in which The Kingdom of Heaven is compared to a grain of mustard seed. It is believed that while the ancient Greeks used the seeds for seasoning dishes, it was the ancient Romans who ground these seeds into a paste, which is probably the ancestor of our modern day mustard. The physicians of both civilizations recorded its use as a medicine of sorts.
